On Sunday World Poker Tour (WPT) Dublin came to an end and David Shallow was crowned the first WPT Dublin Champion. Traditionally all WPT finals are six handed however this time due to the double elimination on the bubble during Day 3 of the event only five players came back to the felt to compete for the top prize in the final. Shallow began the day in an overwhelming 6-1chip lead to his nearest competitor and used his advantage wisely to conquer to starting 338 player field to earn the champion’s title and the €289,031 main prize.
Steven Watts became the first victim of the day when Ronan Gilligan raised on the button and Watts went all in with over 1.1 million chips. Gilligan called and open A, K against Watts’ pocket tens.
Although at this point Watts was ahead with his tens he definitely did not want to see another one coming after the flop of Q, J, 7. 9 on the turn did not change the score for both players however a T on the river meant the straight for Gilligan and the end of the WPT journey for Watts. Watts was eliminated 5th with €40,465 prize money.
Soon afterwards Patrik Vestlin raised from the button and Gilligan called from the big blind. The flop came with 9s, 7s, 3s, Gilligan checked and Vestlin bet. Gilligan check-raised to 450,000, Vestling shoved with 1,75 million and Gilligan called. Gilligan showed Js, 9d for a pair and a flush draw to see Vestlin’s As, Qc for a nut flush draw. However both the turn and the river blanked and he was sent packing in the fourth place with €51,063. Because of this huge hand Gilligan took over the chip lead with 4.8 million leaving Shallow in the second place with 4.2 million and Chaz Chattha with 1 million.
Unfortunately for him Gilligan could not hold the lead for long and fell the next victim when Shallow, on the small blind, raised with Td, 9d. Gilligan called with 4h, 3d. The flop offered shallow top pair and Gilligan got an open-ended straight draw so no surprise that this attracted a huge pot when both players were all in. The turn of Kd, and the river of 8s did not change the position and Gilligan hit the rail in the third place with €96,339 payout. Shallow’s chip count went up to 7,280,000 into the heads up.
Chattha was not about to give in and at one stage he did even manage to take the chip lead, unfortunately for him he could not hold on to his chips for long enough. Shallow fought back got chip lead back and finally won the top prize when in the final hand he raised to 135,000, Chattha reraised to 380,000, Shallow then four-bet to 825,000 and Chattha pushed all in. Shallow called with pocket queens to see pocket nines of his opponent.
The board brought K, K, 2, 8, 3 so Chattha earned €144,502 second prize and Shallow won Dublin WPT champion’s title, the cup, a $25,500 seat to WPT World Championship event and 289,031 first prize.
