WPT Ireland Day 1

By Julia, 06, January, 2012 - 13:28

The first event of the World Poker Tour 2012 began on Thursday in Dublin. €2,500 buy-in WPT Main Event is held at the Citywest Hotel. 338 players  registered for Day 1, which is a good number players considering that many pros chose to head for much warmer Bahamas to play in the Caribbean Adventure which kicked off on the same date. 195 players were still in the game at the end of the night at Dublin and local Irishman Dave Callaghan is leading the field with 186,900 chips. Although Callaghan is know to be a pot limit Omaha player he had a very successful day in the Main Event and built his stack slowly through out the day. His biggest pot came when his opponent pushed all in with 22,000 chips on the flop of K, K, 9. Callaghan called with pocket jacks against his opponents pocket eights. The turn and the river missed both players and awarded Callaghan with a huge pot of over 45,000 chips.

Shaun Conning, Johannes Meyer, Jacob Nielson and Andy Black are all holding some top positions on the leaderboard. Black earned his spot when he took a big pot with the blinds at 100/200 level. Black raised preflop to 600, Sofia Lovgren joined the action and three-bet to 1,300, Black called. The flop brought Js, 7h, 3s. Black checked, Lovgren bet and Black check-raised to 4,500. Lovgren called. The turn came with 3d. Black added 4,600 to the pot, Lovgren called. The river brought 4d. Black 15,000 chips into the middle of the table, Lovgren called again to see Black’s pocket sevens for a full house. Lovgren mucked and 80,000 pot went to Black.

Other known players who advanced into day 2 with good chip counts are Jon Kalmar with 97,300 chips, David Nicholson with 92,100, Sam El Sayed with 90,400. McLean Karr, Jake Cody, Kara Scott, Russell Carson are all still in the game.

Some known players who were eliminated on the first day include Matt Perrins, Barny Boatman, Padraig Parkinson, John Eames and Sam Trickett. Trickett was the last player to hit the rail on the first day as he had a misfortune of a particularly unlucky hand when his pocket kings ran into pocket aces of his opponents and then in the next hand he had to push his last chips with A, T to come across A, Q.

Day 2 will begin on Friday at 14:00 GMT.
