Wednesday the 22nd of September saw the start of Day 1b of the World Poker Tour (WPT) Malta. 139 players joined the tables on the day making the total number of participants in the first WPT in Malta 240 and established prize pool of €698,400. Tommy Vedes fished the day in the chip lead with 115,500 chips.
Plenty of well-known faces could be seen in the room including some players who started playing in Day 1a, got eliminated and then took advantage of the tournament reentry system. Phil Hellmuth, Steven Kelly, Sam El, Dragan Galic, John Eames, McLean Karr, Ivan Freitez all paid second buy-in fee to have another chance in their fight for the top prize. However by the end of the day out af those players only Hellmuth, Eames and Galic were able to progress into Day2 with relatively low chip count. Hellmuth finished with 34,035 chips, Galic bagged up 23,350 and Eames will begin the next day with just 17,100. All three will have a lot of work to do to advance in the game.
By the end of the day the field shrunk to 90 players who will join 64 survivors from Day1a making the total for Day 2 154 players. Day 1a chip leader Fabien Sartoris remained overall chip leader but there are still plenty of players with strong chip counts to show strong opposition.
Day 2 will begin on Thursday 23rd of September at 16:00 CEST.
